The Softball Spectacular is the longest-running tournament in our summer series. Established in 2006, the Softball Spectacular coincides with the closing weekend of the National Cherry Festival. Not gonna lie....Traverse City is HOPPIN' this time of year. Make plans to join the fun and play in a high-quality softball tournament in Traverse City! Register below...
The Traverse City Waves are happy to welcome the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa as a tournament sponsor for 2023!
The Resort is located approximately 10 minutes from the Grand Traverse County Civic Center, the Trojan Athletic Complex, and the other tournament sites at which games will be played. The Grand Traverse Resort features TWO large pools--one inside and one outside--along with shops and restaurants onsite. Downtown Traverse City is a short drive away, but if you want to head in the opposite direction, you'll find the charming village of Elk Rapids about 12 minutes to the north of the resort. Turtle Creek Casino is right around the corner.
One designated representative from each team can email Tammy Palmer to get information on contracted room blocks of 10 or more guestrooms per night. The resort is requiring two night minimum for TC Waves Tournament teams. Availability is limited so don’t wait to contact Tammy at Tammy.palmer@gtresort.com.
Should a team not wish to contract at least 10 guestrooms per night for two nights, please contact the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa reservations department at 231-534-6100 to book individual reservations. Currently the Grand Traverse Resort is sold out the weekend of June 2-4, 2023.

Four teams from four different organizations captured Softball Spectacular tournament titles as the Traverse City Summer Softball Series came to an end over the weekend.
There was perfect weather all weekend long as teams in the 10U, 12U, 14U and High School divisions waged friendly battle on the softball fields of Traverse City.
In the 10U group, Ken Elkins' Inter-Lakes Pride ambushed the Au Sable Barracudas with 12 runs in the third inning en route to a 12-0 victory. The Barracudas--a late entry and a team new to the Traverse City tournaments--had a great tournament weekend, but the Pride bats were too strong to overcome in the final.
In the 12U division, the Frank Yoskovich-led Michigan Batbusters rolled over Motor City Madness 11U, 12-0, to earn the home plate trophy. Nick McCalla's Madness 11U also had a great tournament run, but the Batbusters were definitely the cream of the 12U crop.
In 14U, Joe Sarnicola's Elite '08 squad doubled up the Great Lakes Renegades, 6-3, in the championship game. Coach Sarnicola, whose teams seem to make a deep tournament run every year, skippered his team to four wins on Sunday alone, including the title game victory.
In the High School division, the Caledonia Chaos edged the Northern Michigan Legends, 2-0, in a well-played contest. Like Elite '08, Chris Dana's Chaos squad rang up four wins on Sunday--after going 3-0 in pool play--while giving up just five runs total throughout the four Sunday games. Wow!
There was lots of action in the "B" and "C" finals also. In 10U, the Caledonia Chaos edged 231 Fusion, 5-4. The Fusion's 12U compadres doubled up the Grand Rapids Diamonds in that division's consolation final. In 14U, Kris Siadi's 5-Tool Fastpitch team defeated the Petoskey Blaze, 12-0, in the B-final while HangTuf edged the Grand Rapids Flames in the C-final. In the High School group, the Petoskey Blaze captured the B-final with a 7-2 victory over the Traverse City Thunder Newman team, while Recon Reno scratched out a C-final victory over the Northern Michigan Pride, 3-2.
Overall, it was a great weekend of softball. Thank you to the teams that participated--look for the 2023 Summer Series schedule to be posted very soon!

What a great way to finish the 2021 Traverse City Summer Softball Series! the 16th Softball Spectacular was a blast, with 57 teams from 4 states battling it out on the softball fields of Traverse City. In between, the players and their families were able to take in the closing days of the National Cherry Festival, go for a swim in still-chilly Lake Michigan, check out the local shops or end their day around a campfire.
The tournament was LOTS of fun, with exceptional play exhibited in all divisions. The hometown Waves team came of age as they captured the high school division in thrilling fashion. The Hangtuf-Garcia team survived a gauntlet of 24 teams to capture the 14U group, while the Grand Rapids Diamonds Ritsema squad came out on top in a LOADED 12U division. And the 10U 231 Fusion team just kept winning, going undefeated over the weekend en route to another Traverse City tournament title, their second this summer. All of the action happened against a backdrop of sunny skies and comfortable temperatures, a welcome contrast to the washout conditions that plagued all tournaments in Michigan two weeks ago.
The high school edition of the Traverse City Waves (pictured above) might have been the biggest surprise of the weekend. A 15U squad, the Waves entered bracket play as second seed. They dispatched of the Grand Rapids Diamonds, 5-4, and the Ohio Classics, 3-1, to reach the championship game. In a back and forth tussle with Hangtuf Laubenthal, Sophie Hardy's sixth-inning single scored two runs and propelled the Waves to an 8-6 victory. Congrats, ladies!
The other big surprise of the tournament happened in the 14U division where Hangtuf Garcia edged a talented Mid-Michigan Bolts team, 7-6, to win the title. The surprise wasn't that Hangtuf won--they are an excellent team that can really hit the ball. The surprise was that they were in the finals to begin with! Hangtuf made the 12-team "A" bracket by a whisker, qualifying 12th. On Sunday, the Hangtuf girls were on fire. They got past 5th-seeded Pirates Fastpitch (11-0), 4th-seeded Elgin (IL) Heat (2-0), and top-seeded 231 Fusion Fastpitch (11-3) to earn a finals berth. A late-inning rally gave Hangtuf a three-run cushion and they needed all of that as they held off a furious last-inning charge by the Bolts. Great job by all of the 14U teams!
A coach in the 12U division said that the three best teams they've played all year were in this tournament. And his team was in the championship game! It was a loaded division, and the play reflected the high quality of the teams. In the end, Steve Ritsema's Grand Rapids Diamonds team put on an impressive display of pitching and just plain slugging the ball out of the ballpark as they overcame Jeremiah Peace's talented Saginaw Bay Lady RiverDawgs squad, 9-4, to capture the 12U tournament championship. Great work!
In the 10U group, Levi Griffore's 231 Fusion went undefeated in round robin play to win another home plate trophy....an excellent team.
The consolation bracket champions were Michigan Angels (high school division), USA Pride (14U "B"), Moran Iron Works Vulcans (14U "C"), and TC Thunder (12U).
We hope everyone enjoyed the tournament! Thank you to all of the visiting teams from outside the area, and a special thank you to all of the local teams that are such an important part of the Traverse City-area softball family. Best wishes for a successful rest-of-the-season!

Here's a short (2 minutes or so) video story that features highlights the players and teams of the 2021 Softball Spectacular, courtesy of Grand Traverse County Parks And Rec.. Take a look...you might recognize someone you know making plays on the field!
The 2020 Softball Spectacular tournament was a smorgasboard of tasty softball treats, with something for seemingly everyone.
There were some delicious matchups in the 14U division where six of eight games in the championship bracket were decided by one run. There was an all-Traverse City matchup in the championship game of the 12U group. There was an epic battle between two powerhouse teams in the 16U championship game. And there was the Midland Lady Explorers organization ringing up another tournament win against a familiar fixture in the Summer Softball Series' title game--231 Fusion Fastpitch.
After a soggy start on Friday--some places soggier than others--Mother Nature cooperated again and the bulk of tournament play on Saturday and Sunday proceded without a speck of rain in sight. In the 14U division, the hometown Traverse City Waves - Shepherd squad captured its second tournament title in the last three Traverse City tournaments, this time with a convincing 10-5 victory over Lake Effect Athletics. The Waves were title winners in the Cherry Capital Showdown and runner up in the Bayside Bash earlier in the season.
Similarly, Steve Steimel's 231 Fusion Fastpitch team won for the second time in three tries this summer, this time defeating the 12U Traverse City Waves 5-1 in the championship final. The 12U group was highly competitive, but the Fusion girls, crowned last month as Cherry Capital Showdown champions, put together 6 straight wins and have gone 18-1 in the last three Traverse City tournaments.
In the 16U division, Lake Effect Athletics doubled up USA Pride 6-3 in the championship final. There were a LOT of tough outs in the 16U field--it was possibly the most competitive 16U division in at least two years to play in Traverse City. Congratulations, ladies.
In the 10U group, Todd Rivard's Midland Lady Explorers squad defeated Will Fleming's 231 Fusion team, 10-2, in the finals. Earlier in the summer, the Fusion won the Cherry Capital Showdown title. Great job, all!
In the 12U consolation finals, the Rochester Hills Moose defeated 231 Fusion Fastpitch - Birgy 7-4. In 14U, Krash Cross slipped by the Anchor Bay Angels, 5-4. And in the 16U consolation group, TC Thunder Reed overpowered the Great Lakes Renegades, 17-3, in the final game.
We want to extend a huge THANK YOU to all of the parents, players and coaches who exhibited flexibility and compliance as we worked through several new procedures made necessary by the coronavirus pandemic. We hoped to provide a safe atmosphere for the girls to get back on the field and have some fun playing softball. It looked like LOTS of girls were having LOTS of fun on the field of play--again, thank you for your cooperation to help make the tournament possible
Coaches: Please send in your All-Tournament Team nominations (2 choices from your team unless you made the finals--then send in up to 4). We'd like to recognize those girls who played particularly well in the 2020 Softball Spectacular tournament. Email to: JSBrunner777@yahoo.com

It's Fusion Times Two!!! Romeo Renegades Storm The 12U Division!! Mid-MIchigan Heat Locks Up A 16U Title!!
It's a wrap....and a sweep!
The "wrap" was the conclusion of the Traverse City Summer Softball Series, in Softball Spectacular fashion. The 14th version of the popular summer tournament saw excellent play and close games in three of the four championship finals.
The "sweep" was accomplished by the 10U 231 Fusion Fastpitch team. The young Fusion squad, led by the play of All-Tournament Team selections Piper Cavanaugh and Claire McDaniel, won its third Traverse City tournament title in as many attempts this year. Previously winners of the Spring Splash and Northern Classic, the Fusion overwhelmed the TC Thunder, 15-0, to earn another home plate trophy. Congratulations, girls!
The 12U division of the Softball Spectacular was a topsy-turvy affair. The #1 and #2 seeds following pool play--South Lyon Stealth and TC Waves, respectively--were upended in the semifinals. Brant Perry's Romeo Renegades came from behind to edge Dustin Barnebee's Klash '06 team, 5-4, to earn a Softball Spectacular championship. The entire 12U division was tightly contested, with many teams having a legitimate shot at capturing hardware. Great job, all!
In the 14U group, Jason Merchant's 231 Fusion team edged hometown counterpart the Traverse City Waves, 3-1, in the title contest. Combined with the 10U Fusion victory, it marked only the second time that the same organization captured titles in two different Softball Spectacular age divisions (Moran Iron Works Vulcans 14U and 16U, 2016). The Waves, a sensational 13U team, had another strong tournament. Well done, ladies!
The two teams--Mid-Michigan Heat and Lady Lakers Behling--that met in the finals proved their toughness by running the gauntlet of three Sunday games played to reach the title game.
In the end, it was the Heat prevailing, 4-3, to earn the title. The Lady Lakers were making a return appearance in Traverse City after winning the Cherry Capital Showdown title two weeks ago. Excellent work, ladies!
Thank you parents, players and fans for attending our tournament. The fans and players at this year's tournament showed a high level of
sportsmanship and positivity. We hope you enjoyed your weekend in Traverse City!
Congratulations to the top performers in the 2019 Softball Spectacular tournament! (Coaches: If your players are not listed and you'd like to recognize outstanding individual performances from your team, please email your All-Tournament Team nominations to JSBrunner777@yahoo.com)
