Summer Fun. Traverse City.
The 2020 Futures Challenge date is set! Plan to bring your newly-selected team to Traverse City on Sunday, September 13th, for a fun, low-key one-day tournament that gives coaches a chance to see their crew in action and players--especially new players--a chence to gain valuable tournament experience heading into the winter workout season. Visit the Futures Challenge page for more information and to register your team.
Here's the lineup of tournaments in the 2021 Traverse City Summer Tournament Series:
Make plans to bring your team to combine a mini-vacation with a weekend of fun, quality softball! 2021 tournament details will be released in October of this year.
The Michigan Blasters, an excellent 12U team based in the Ithaca area, captured what we believe is the first tournament title in Michigan in 2020 by winning the 12U division of the Opening Day Tourney this past Saturday. The Waves research department is researching that right now (didn't know we had a research department, did you?), but we believe that the Opening Day tourney was the first one in Michigan this year, so....
Heidi McMurphy's team defeated Kendra Licari's Mt. Pleasant Drillers squad in the title game. Both teams played great throughout the one-day tournament--congratulations, ladies!
In the 14U division, Phil Meeker's Northern Michigan Elite squad stifled the Traverse City Waves 14U team of Doug Shepherd and company to earn the tournament trophy. Again excellent play by both teams and many others in the 14U group! THANK YOU to all of the parents, players and families who worked with us under the procedures we put in place to make the tournament happen. It was great to see girls having a lot of fun playing softball again!!
The Waves is an organization formed in 2004 and based in Traverse City, and provides the opportunity for young players to learn and enjoy the game of softball. Former Waves players have had successful high school sports and academic careers...played softball in college...won national championships in rowing...earned all-area, all-region, and all-state honors in softball and other sports...made successful transitions into college, graduated from college, established professional careers...and more! The Waves organization has funded over $11,000 in college scholarships and continues to emphasize providing opportunities for girls to excel athletically and academically while having fun playing softball.
The Waves hosted the fifteenth Traverse City Softball Spectacular in 2020. Because of overwhelmingly positive feedback from our visiting teams, we added the Northern Classic tournament in 2008 to allow more teams the opportunity to combine a mini-vacation in the Traverse City area with a first class, enjoyable tournament. The Cherry Capital Showdown was added to the tournament schedule a few years ago and has quickly become a favorite among teams from throughout the state. In 2016, the Spring Splash was added to the series, an early-season tournament for younger teams. The three-year-old Bayside Bash offers a chance to experience the National Cherry Festival along with playing in a fun, quality tournament. Finally, 2016 also saw the start of the Futures Challenge, a low-key one day tune-up tournament for teams that have just selected their squads for next summer season. We would love to have your team participate in our tournaments. Please send a note if you're interested in bringing your team to Traverse City.
