5/24/20 Here is part of an email that went out to coaches today. If you are a parent with a player on a team registered for the June 12-14 Northern Classic, please contact your coach for additional information regarding refunds or the option of playing on the rescheduled date of July 17-19.
It is with great disappointment that I’m writing to let you know that the Northern Classic will not take place on the weekend of June 12-14.
As you know, on Friday night of Memorial Day weekend, Governor Whitmer announced continued restrictions on travel (stay home, stay safe) and on the size of gatherings (no more than 10 in a group), among other things. Without these restrictions being relaxed, we are forced to at least postpone, if not cancel, scheduled tournaments in our Traverse City summer series, including the Northern Classic in which your team is registered.
Almost all of the fields we have available for use in Traverse City are owned or managed by government entities—Grand Traverse County, Traverse City Area Public Schools, and townships surrounding Traverse City. These groups are great partners…very supportive, great people in place locally. They are 100% behind the Waves’ goal of providing girls the opportunity to play quality tournament softball in a fun, safe atmosphere in Traverse City. After speaking with representatives of all of these entities in the past 10 days, though, I can tell you that they are going to properly follow the governor’s restrictions and recommendations to the letter. For us, that means none of these fields will be available for tournament play until those restrictions are relaxed.
As an organization, we are confident we can provide a safe atmosphere in which to play, given the chance. We have borrowed and/or developed a list of policies and procedures for return-to-play that will be implemented to mitigate the concern surrounding low-risk participants playing a no- or low-contact sport outdoors in the virus-killing sun while their parents and siblings implement social distancing measures. However, we DEFINITELY understand many people’s hesitance to travel and are mindful of the toll unemployment issues have taken on Michigan families, including those in our extended tournament softball family. We’re all in a very difficult situation. Please check back for updates.
The Traverse City Waves are happy to welcome back the Great Wolf Lodge as a major sponsor of the Waves 2020 Summer Tournament Series. If you've never stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge, you should! Large rooms, great location, many amenities on site, and the best waterpark in Traverse City waiting for players to splash around in after their games....it's a blast! Contact Brett Bowman at 231-534-9074 to reserve your room or a block of rooms for your team.
The Waves is an organization formed in 2004 and based in Traverse City, and provides the opportunity for young players to learn and enjoy the game of softball. Former Waves players have had successful high school sports and academic careers...played softball in college...won national championships in rowing...earned all-area, all-region, and all-state honors in softball and other sports...made successful transitions into college, graduated from college, established professional careers...and more! The Waves organization has funded over $11,000 in college scholarships and continues to emphasize providing opportunities for girls to excel athletically and academically while having fun playing softball.
The Waves hosted the fourteenth Traverse City Softball Spectacular in 2019. Because of overwhelmingly positive feedback from our visiting teams, we added the Northern Classic tournament in 2008 to allow more teams the opportunity to combine a mini-vacation in the Traverse City area with a first class, enjoyable tournament. The Cherry Capital Showdown was added to the tournament schedule a few years ago and has quickly become a favorite among teams from throughout the state. In 2016, the Spring Splash was added to the series, an early-season tournament for younger teams. The two-year-old Bayside Bash offers a chance to experience the National Cherry Festival along with playing in a fun, quality tournament. Finally, 2016 also saw the start of the Futures Challenge, a low-key one day tune-up tournament for teams that have just selected their squads for next summer season. We would love to have your team participate in our tournaments. Please send a note if you're interested in bringing your team to Traverse City.
Thank you to the Great Wolf Lodge for sponsoring the 2019 Waves Summer Softball Series! Visiting teams: Contact Brett Bowman at 231-534-9074 or email@example.com to reserve rooms for the tournament weekend
