Now THAT was fun! The 2024 Bayside Bash featured something for everyone. There was the excitement of the opening weekend of the National Cherry Festival, complete with an Air Show directly over the Civic Center and TAC. It included Mother Nature kicking up her heels in the form of a downpour on Friday and again on Saturday. There was a sunny Sunday afternoon with fall-like temperatures. There were some really good teams in attendance, probably some of the best we've seen in Traverse City. Overall, a fun time!
On the field, four teams outlasted the competition to take home Bayside Bash titles. In the 18U group where there was some high-level play throughout, Jags Fastpitch used just enough hitting to back the tremendous pitching of Grace Main, who didn't allow an earned run all weekend while striking out 20 players in 19 innings. The Jags captured the title game, 3-0, over an excellent Motor City Madness team.
In the 16U group, the Great Lakes Renegades slugged their way to a 13-3 championship victory over Crown Softball. Meanwhile, in the 14U division, Warriors Fastpitch capped an unbeaten weekend with a 13-3 win over Lightning Fastpitch in the finals.
And in 12U, the Michigan Rebels got hot at the right time on their way to earning a Bayside Bash championship with a title game win over the Grand Rapids Diamonds.
Thanks, everyone, for attending our tournament! We hope you enjoyed the weekend in Traverse City!

We knew it was going to rain. We just knew it. The TV weather forecasters said it was going to pour, and they're hardly ever wrong. And it rained, right before the 2023 Bayside Bash crossed the finish line. Rats.
Up until about 5 p.m. on Sunday, there was some terrific play on the field of Traverse City. The "big girls" were in town--first time ever for an 18U division in Traverse City, with lots of high school stars and some young collegiate athletes battling it out for their respective teams. The 16U group featured twenty-six teams competing for a tournament title, and another 22 teams in the 14U group slugged it out for a chance to compete for a championship. All three of those divisions were in the final game when the skies darkened. Thunderbolts and lightning--very, very frightening--chased the teams from the field and led to co-champions being crowned in three divisions.
In the 12U group, though, the Grosse Pointe Diamonds and Motor City Madness teams put together a masterpiece in the finals, with the Diamonds ekeing out a 1-0 win to earn a Bayside Bash title. Bracket play featured the top four seeds in the semifinals--the #4 Madness team upset top-seeded Krash Latusek, 3-1, and the #2 Diamonds doubled up the #3 TC Thunder, 6-3. Overall, it was an excellent division with good competition and good sportsmanship among teams. Great job, ladies!
In the 14U group, B-45 Academy and Krash Peru went undefeated in the tournament and were battling it out in the finals when the skies opened up. Both teams were crowned co-champions.
That same situation occurred in the 16U division where the Classics Heat and Next Level Performance--the top two teams following pool play--proceeded on a crash course to the finals. Congratulations to both squads who earned co-champion honors.
In the 18U division, Phil Meeker's Northern Michigan Elite team caught fire in bracket play. NME upset the top-seeded Midland Lady Explorers in Round Two and went on to earn a spot in the finals. They were leading 5-1 against Katie Smith's Turnin' 2 squad when the rains came. Both teams had terrific Sunday runs to the title game and earned co-champion honors as well.
We hope all of the teams who participated in the 2023 Bayside Bash enjoyed their weekend in Traverse City. It was refreshing to see all of the good sportsmanship that was on display--it made the weekend a lot more fun for everyone. Best wishes to the Bayside Bash teams for a good rest-of-the-summer!
There were some REALLY talented players in town for the 2023 Bayside Bash--some of them caught the attention of Mel the Puppy, a big Northern Michigan Elite fan. Here are the players who starred on the field--the All-Tournament Team! I'm just going to say it right now. It's remarkable how the level of play has increased over the past six or seven years of the Traverse City Summer Softball Series! There are some really good players who we've had the pleasure to watch play softball in Traverse City, especially this season. Their full talents were on display at the recently-concluded Bayside Bash (see the All-Tournament Team selections for proof).
The 2022 Bayside Bash was three days of really good weather, really good play, and some really good teams that captured tournament titles.
Bryan Morrissey's Michigan Sabercats team was one of them. The Sabercats were unbeaten over the weekend en route to earning the 12U Bayside Bash title. In Sunday's bracket play, the Sabercats dispatched the Michigan Classics before upending an impressive Elite 11U team in the semifinals. In the championship meeting of two undefeated teams, the Sabercats wore down the Mid-Michigan Heat, 6-2. Congratulations, all....
In the 14U group, Finesse Davis rolled past the Traverse City Thunder, 22-3, to earn the tournament title. The Thunder reached the finals by dispatching crosstown rival Traverse City Waves, 9-5, while Finesse Davis earned a place in the finals from the other side of the bracket with a 7-5 semifinal victory over Elite Parm.
The high school division featured the closest final of the tournament. Mid-Michigan Heat 18U and Krash 16U battled for NINE innings before the Heat pushed across a run to earn the tournament championship, 5-4. The high school field was loaded with exceptional teams--Tim Robinson's Heat and Kaelin Cross's Krash squads were formidable throughout the weekend....an excellent final.
There were several consolation finals played over the weekend. In the 12U division, the Indy Chaos doubled up Elite 12U, 6-3. In the 14U group, the Petoskey Blaze edged Lady Irish Baldwin, 5-4. In the high school "B" final, Mid-Michigan Heat Schuler defeated the Petoskey Blaze, 5-3, while in the "C" final the Michigan Rebels outlasted Folds of Honor Ursul, 9-6
As always, we say "thank you" to all of the teams that participated in the tournament. It was a great three days of softball, and we hope you enjoyed the weekend in Traverse City!
Gander below for the players who made the All-Tournament Team!!! Coaches: If your team is not represented, please send your selections (2, unless you made the championship finals in which case you can nominate 4 players) to JSBrunner777@yahoo.com

Bluebird skies and fast action...14-block walks in flip-flops to the whiskey joint and perusing the storefronts of downtown...dipping toes into chilly Lake Michigan and careening down the Great Wolf Lodge waterslide after playing softball in 80-degree temperatures...dazzling defense and wallbanging offense. All of these were part of the 2020 Bayside Bash in Traverse City!
But the main action was on the field. The 10U's took the weekend off in Traverse City, but the 12's, 14's and the first-time High School division featured robust collections of teams and solid play throughout the weekend.
In a premier matchup, Jamie Tuttle's Grand Rapids Diamonds 14U team upended the Traverse City Waves - Shepherd squad 10-2 to capture the 24-team 14U divison. The Waves, fresh off of a Cherry Capital Showdown title, made another strong run to the finals before succumbing to the Diamonds. The 14U division was notable for all of the intra-program matchups in bracket play. In first-round games, the Waves -Shepherd 14U's slipped past the Waves - Liles 13U team, 7-2....the TC Thunder Hawkins 14U squad edged the Thunder - Hamilton 13U team, 7-5. And in the semifinals of bracket play, Tuttle's Diamonds team edged sister squad Diamonds - Marlewitz, 7-5. Overall there was terrific action in the 14U group---very competitive, very fun to watch.
In the 14U consolation final, the Mt. Pleasant Drillers - Johnston team edged the Ogemaw Outlaws, 6-4.
The 16U group was another hotly-contested affair. Pool games on Friday were incredibly close--two 1-0 games, some other 1-run contests, and lots of action that carried throughout the weekend. When the dust settled, the Elite Hardin-Flak team held the home plate trophy aloft, thanks to a 9-0 win over the Petoskey Blaze. Dave Serafini's Blaze team had it's second straight excellent showing--only two losses in two weekends in Traverse City, and they look poised to have a great summer. This was the first year of games in the high school division, and the addition of the older girls to the mix made for some excellent ballgames.
In the high school consolation final, the South Farmington Wildcards took home some swag again, defeating 231 Fusion Fastpitch 13-0 in the title game. The Wildcards are familiar fixtures in title games in Traverse City. Great job by all of the high school division teams!!!!
In the 12U division, Larry Gildea's Michigan Rebels team, a last-minute addition to the Bayside Bash field, ran the table en route to the tournament title. The Rebels edged Steve Steimel's 231 Fusion team---which made ANOTHER long tournament run-- 3-1, in the championship. Again, there were some REALLY good 12U teams in attendance...very fun to watch!
In the 12U consolation final, northern Michigan squads Alpena Thundercats and TC Thunder faced off, with the Thundercats earning the consolation title, 11-1.
We hope all of the players and families who participated in the Bayside Bash enjoyed the weekend in Traverse City!

Waves Roll In 12U!!! Express REPEATS As 14U Champs!!! Top Prospects Pladies Win An Extra-Inning Nail-Biter In 16U!!!
Now THIS was a fun tournament! The Thunderbirds treated participating teams to flyovers at all three game sites...the weather was pretty close to perfect, with temperatures in the low 80's and bluebird skies all weekend...rumors floated around that some teams threw caution to the wind and actually went for a swim in frigid Grand Traverse Bay, while others took a side trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes and still others immersed themselves in the downtown action of the Cherry Festival. All three divisions dripped with excitement and intriguing story lines as the Bayside Bash raced toward the finish line. Where to start.....?
....How about with 12U? Sixteen teams populated the 12U division, including a hefty dose of northern Michigan squads and a equal amount of visiting teams from all corners of the state. After an exciting round of pool play with teams jockeying for position, and a frantic schedule of bracket play games on Sunday, Ryan Craig's 12U Waves team was left holding the championship hardware. The Waves squad, after solid showings in earlier Traverse City Summer Series tournaments, dismantled an excellent Alpena Thundercats team, 12-0, to take home their first championship win. Congratulations, ladies!!!
In the 12U consolation finals, the first-year Salt River Lady Bandits Red squad earned title honors with a 7-4 victory over Julie Mulder's West Michigan Riptide team.
Ben Lundquist's Cadillac Express team did something that hadn't been done since the 2013 Moran Iron Works Vulcans 16U team accomplished the feat in the Softball Spectacular tournament--the Express REPEATED as tournament champions! Last year's 14U Bayside Bash champion was THIS year's 14U Bayside Bash champion, courtesy of a 5-0 victory over Tony Menard's Grand Rapids Diamonds. The Express and the Diamonds put together sensational Sunday win streaks to reach the finals of a strong 20-team 14U division. Way to go, girls!!!
In the 14U consolation title game, the Lisle Slammers (Illinois) defeated the Michigan Rebels.
But without question, the most exciting championship game happened in the 16U division where the Top Prospects Pladies team met the South Farmington Wildcards. There were super-talented players all over the field...two evenly matched squads that battled back and forth for a rollicking eight innings before the Prospects pulled out a 13-12 walk-off win. The game lurched one way, then another, with both teams clubbing balls off the fence, with daring baserunners challenging the opposing outfielders at every turn, and with both teams generally throwing haymaker after haymaker in their turns at bat. It was as fun a game to watch as I can remember.
Down 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth, the Prospects plated three runs to send the game to extra innings. Each team scored a run in the seventh before the Wildcards took a two-run lead in the top of the eighth. With two out, the Prospects pushed one, then two, then the third--and winning run--across the plate, triggering a wild celebration. Trinity Westra, an All-Tournament Team selection, seemed to be in the middle of every Prospects rally. Fittingly, she scored the winning run. Sensational play by two tremendous, evenly matched teams...
We hope all of our participating teams and families enjoyed their weekend in Traverse City! Thank you for coming to our tournament...
