The Bayside Bash has quickly become one of the most fun and competitive tournaments in our Summer Series. There have been lots of great games, and lots of great fun had in and around the Traverse City area. Here are the Bayside Bash details....

Bluebird skies and fast action...14-block walks in flip-flops to the whiskey joint and perusing the storefronts of downtown...dipping toes into chilly Lake Michigan and careening down the Great Wolf Lodge waterslide after playing softball in 80-degree temperatures...dazzling defense and wallbanging offense. All of these were part of the 2020 Bayside Bash in Traverse City!
But the main action was on the field. The 10U's took the weekend off in Traverse City, but the 12's, 14's and the first-time High School division featured robust collections of teams and solid play throughout the weekend.
In a premier matchup, Jamie Tuttle's Grand Rapids Diamonds 14U team upended the Traverse City Waves - Shepherd squad 10-2 to capture the 24-team 14U divison. The Waves, fresh off of a Cherry Capital Showdown title, made another strong run to the finals before succumbing to the Diamonds. The 14U division was notable for all of the intra-program matchups in bracket play. In first-round games, the Waves -Shepherd 14U's slipped past the Waves - Liles 13U team, 7-2....the TC Thunder Hawkins 14U squad edged the Thunder - Hamilton 13U team, 7-5. And in the semifinals of bracket play, Tuttle's Diamonds team edged sister squad Diamonds - Marlewitz, 7-5. Overall there was terrific action in the 14U group---very competitive, very fun to watch.
In the 14U consolation final, the Mt. Pleasant Drillers - Johnston team edged the Ogemaw Outlaws, 6-4.
The 16U group was another hotly-contested affair. Pool games on Friday were incredibly close--two 1-0 games, some other 1-run contests, and lots of action that carried throughout the weekend. When the dust settled, the Elite Hardin-Flak team held the home plate trophy aloft, thanks to a 9-0 win over the Petoskey Blaze. Dave Serafini's Blaze team had it's second straight excellent showing--only two losses in two weekends in Traverse City, and they look poised to have a great summer. This was the first year of games in the high school division, and the addition of the older girls to the mix made for some excellent ballgames.
In the high school consolation final, the South Farmington Wildcards took home some swag again, defeating 231 Fusion Fastpitch 13-0 in the title game. The Wildcards are familiar fixtures in title games in Traverse City. Great job by all of the high school division teams!!!!
In the 12U division, Larry Gildea's Michigan Rebels team, a last-minute addition to the Bayside Bash field, ran the table en route to the tournament title. The Rebels edged Steve Steimel's 231 Fusion team---which made ANOTHER long tournament run-- 3-1, in the championship. Again, there were some REALLY good 12U teams in attendance...very fun to watch!
In the 12U consolation final, northern Michigan squads Alpena Thundercats and TC Thunder faced off, with the Thundercats earning the consolation title, 11-1.
We hope all of the players and families who participated in the Bayside Bash enjoyed the weekend in Traverse City!

Waves Roll In 12U!!! Express REPEATS As 14U Champs!!! Top Prospects Pladies Win An Extra-Inning Nail-Biter In 16U!!!
Now THIS was a fun tournament! The Thunderbirds treated participating teams to flyovers at all three game sites...the weather was pretty close to perfect, with temperatures in the low 80's and bluebird skies all weekend...rumors floated around that some teams threw caution to the wind and actually went for a swim in frigid Grand Traverse Bay, while others took a side trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes and still others immersed themselves in the downtown action of the Cherry Festival. All three divisions dripped with excitement and intriguing story lines as the Bayside Bash raced toward the finish line. Where to start.....?
....How about with 12U? Sixteen teams populated the 12U division, including a hefty dose of northern Michigan squads and a equal amount of visiting teams from all corners of the state. After an exciting round of pool play with teams jockeying for position, and a frantic schedule of bracket play games on Sunday, Ryan Craig's 12U Waves team was left holding the championship hardware. The Waves squad, after solid showings in earlier Traverse City Summer Series tournaments, dismantled an excellent Alpena Thundercats team, 12-0, to take home their first championship win. Congratulations, ladies!!!
In the 12U consolation finals, the first-year Salt River Lady Bandits Red squad earned title honors with a 7-4 victory over Julie Mulder's West Michigan Riptide team.
Ben Lundquist's Cadillac Express team did something that hadn't been done since the 2013 Moran Iron Works Vulcans 16U team accomplished the feat in the Softball Spectacular tournament--the Express REPEATED as tournament champions! Last year's 14U Bayside Bash champion was THIS year's 14U Bayside Bash champion, courtesy of a 5-0 victory over Tony Menard's Grand Rapids Diamonds. The Express and the Diamonds put together sensational Sunday win streaks to reach the finals of a strong 20-team 14U division. Way to go, girls!!!
In the 14U consolation title game, the Lisle Slammers (Illinois) defeated the Michigan Rebels.
But without question, the most exciting championship game happened in the 16U division where the Top Prospects Pladies team met the South Farmington Wildcards. There were super-talented players all over the field...two evenly matched squads that battled back and forth for a rollicking eight innings before the Prospects pulled out a 13-12 walk-off win. The game lurched one way, then another, with both teams clubbing balls off the fence, with daring baserunners challenging the opposing outfielders at every turn, and with both teams generally throwing haymaker after haymaker in their turns at bat. It was as fun a game to watch as I can remember.
Down 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth, the Prospects plated three runs to send the game to extra innings. Each team scored a run in the seventh before the Wildcards took a two-run lead in the top of the eighth. With two out, the Prospects pushed one, then two, then the third--and winning run--across the plate, triggering a wild celebration. Trinity Westra, an All-Tournament Team selection, seemed to be in the middle of every Prospects rally. Fittingly, she scored the winning run. Sensational play by two tremendous, evenly matched teams...
We hope all of our participating teams and families enjoyed their weekend in Traverse City! Thank you for coming to our tournament...
